Courses Design

The design of the course takes into consideration a range of factors centered on the student’s needs and experience. These factors include students’:
  • previous knowledge of Spanish
  • personal learning style
  • specific needs for the language e.g. written Spanish for report writing, formal spoken Spanish for company presentations, informal, social Spanish , etc.
  • cultural interests and background
  • special requirements
Students can expect to make considerable progress, within a short period, in their knowledge and use of the language as well as their familiarity with the Hispanic culture and its customs. The fact that the school only takes a few students at any one time helps to make this possible.

Courses

Due to the highly personalized nature of our courses, the duration, daily schedule and number of hours per day or week can be modified to suit the particular needs of each student. For example, those students unable to take a full super-intensive, intensive or semi-intensive course can take short courses especially designed to meet their requirements.

Content and methodology

La Serena School’s system covers seven levels from basic survival-level Spanish to near-native proficiency. Emphasis is given to the acquisition of all four language skills, that is: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These skills are built up over a solid grammatical and linguistic base where structures are constantly reinforced and their application extended.

Hispanic Culture

In addition, on the basis that effective communication in a language requires knowledge of the culture and customs of the countries where the language is spoken, in our classes we also incorporate a variety of aspects of the culture from the Hispanic world.
