La Serena is located 460km (280 miles) north of Santiago. Travel from Santiago is possible by plane, bus or car.
Santiago’s international airport is served by most of the major international airlines operating in South America. From there LAN Chile, the main Chilean national and international airline, flies to La Serena’s airport which is 4km outside the city center. The flight time between Santiago and La Serena is just 50 minutes.
By bus the journey between Santiago and La Serena takes around 6 hours. Some of the main bus lines are:
  • Tur-Bus has its own terminal in la Alameda Bernardo O'Higgins near Estación Central and Universidad de Santiago metro stations.
  • Los Corsarios departs from the San Borja bus station (Estación Central). Tel.: 800-320-320
  • Libac has its own bus station, Los Héroes, next to Los Héroes metro station.
  • PullmanBus also uses the San Borja bus station (Estación Central). Tel.: 800-320-320.
  • Flota Barrios uses the San Borja bus station (Estación Central). Tel.: +56-2-490-79-92.
La Serena is linked to Santiago by a superhighway (Carretera Panamericana Norte or Ruta 5 Norte). The toll fee is subject to change according to the day of week and season. The speed limit is 120km/h.
